キング牧師の最後の演説

今日はフェデラル・ホリデー、そう、マーティン・ルーサー・キング・デーである。そして今日がオバマのInaugurationの前日であることを考えると、多くの人にとって今年のマーティン・ルーサー・キング・デーは特に感慨深いものになるはずだ。

去年オバマの演説に心を動かされた人は多いだろう。しかし、キング牧師の演説は、もっと凄かった。もちろんリアルタイムでそれを経験したわけではなく、後から映像を通して知ったに過ぎないのだけど。

僕が最初に持っていたキング牧師のイメージ、教科書から想像していたイメージは、温厚な平和主義者というものだった。マルコムXと比較されることが多かったからか、ガンジーの非暴力主義に心酔していると聞いたからか、きっととてもゆっくりと優しい話し方をする人なんだろうな、と思っていた。

でも、そうじゃなかった。キング牧師の演説は、情熱的で、ドライブ感のある、魂の中に切り込んでくるような激しい演説だった。例えば上の1分間ほどのビデオ - 暗殺される前日にメンフィスで行った彼の最後の演説の最後の部分 - を見るだけでも、その一端にふれることができる。

...We've got some difficult days ahead.
But it doesn't matter with me now.
Because I've been to the mountaintop.
And I don't mind.
Like anybody, I would like to live a long life.
Longevity has its place.
But I'm not concerned about that now.
I just want to do God's will.
And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain.
And I've looked over.
And I've seen the promised land.
I may not get there with you.
But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.

So I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
